Countryside Survey 2007 - Surveyors 6 Month Contract The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK's Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences. Countryside Survey was begun in 1978 and was repeated in 1984, 1990 and 1998. It involves the detailed habitat, veget! ation, soils, and freshwater survey of a random sample of 620 1km squares across Great Britain. You will be able to identify most common higher plants quickly and with confidence with or without the aid of handbooks. Knowledge of common aquatic macrophytes and/or RHS accreditation is also highly desirable although some training will be provided. Recording of vegetation plots and field mapping is likely to be carried out on portable tablet PCs therefore experience in using PDAs, GIS or other computer-based field mapping methods would be very useful. Surveyors will need to speak English fluently as they will need to speak with farmers and other team members. A driving licence is desirable but not totally necessary. Salary will be £18,030.00 per annum. The Survey will begin in April 2007 with a four week training course near Lancaster Surveyors will be based in either: Aberdeenshire; Edinburgh; Lancaster; Oxfordshire; Cambridgeshire; Bangor; or Dorset and the survey will last until 2nd November 2007.
